Community Leader Susan Kirsch and State Senator Scott Wiener
discuss contrasting views on housing density
on the Hawaiian State Senator Stanley Chang's Webinar
Susan Kirsch, community advocate for local control, was Hawaiian Senator Stanley Chang's webinar guest last week. Sen. Chang is following up with an interview with CA
Senator Scott Wiener on Wednesday, July 22 at 1:30 PST. Register at

Sen. Wiener promoted the inflated number that CA faced a housing
shortage of 3.5M units. He pointed his finger at communities unfairly
blaming them for the crisis. He twists the arms of his legislative
colleagues to pass top-down, one-size-fits-all housing
mandates that generously benefit developers and real estate investors,
but harm communities and increase inequity. His campaign coffers are
filled with money from Silicon Valley tech and the real estate industry.
Kirsch, on the other hand, cites the Embarcadero Institute report that discredits the 3.5M housing shortage number
https://embarcaderoinstitute.com/portfolio-items/3-5-million-california-housing-shortage-number-is-wrong-fueling-poor-policy/. She writes about the real challenges that stem from unregulated corporate power
https://calmatters.org/commentary/housing-financialization/ and educates about the financialization of housing

Kirsch's conversation with Senator Chang describes how the Nix the Nine
campaign targets nine housing bills that harm residents and
communities, increase the wealth gap, and weaken safety. She contrasts
Hawaiian and Californian approaches to housing
and concludes with concrete suggestions for meeting housing needs.
I’ve lived in this area since 1968, finishing 4 years of dental school in SF, then 3 years with the Army and returning to Marin County immediately to open a practice from scratch. I fell in love with this community and was determined to create the life of my dreams here with hopes of one day retiring here as well! Well, those efforts have worked out and along the way, with perhaps 50 assistants over 40 years, I was Blessed to have treated thousands of Marinites! I was fortunate also, to have purchased a few homes during that span and now live in Strawberry, Mill Valley! When I read this morning that State legislators are seriously considering “pack and stack” legislation that would either by eminent domain or code changes allow greedy developers to wipe out sections of single family homes and replace them with multifamily apartment buildings, it was incredulous to me and it made me furious! I’m not adverse to affordable housing solutions but I feel it’s unconscionable that this plan could be implemented against the wishes of our residents. This will effectively destroy the single family home neighborhood, the foundation of our lifestyle, and without a doubt, negatively impact the values of our homes! I am vehemently against this State Plan and it’s not going to gain any traction if The People are properly consulted! This going nowhere....not on my watch!
